Introduction The Oxford Dictionary defines incest as sexual intercourse of near relations. Elaborating on this Encyclopaedia Britannica (CD ROM version) writes: Generally speaking, the closer the genetic relationship between two people, the stronger and more highly charged is the taboo prohibiting or discouraging sexual relations between them. Thus, sexual intercourse between a father and daughter, a mother and son, or a brother and sister is almost universally forbidden. Sexual relations between an uncle and niece or between an aunt and nephew are also generally taboo, and relations between first cousins are prohibited as well in some societies. On the harmful effect of incestuous relation Encyclopaedia Britannica also writes: Highly inbred populations have diminished reproductive success and become gene pools for hereditary disorders.
